There is clear evidence that the many rock shelters and caves in the vicinity were occupied by Buddhist monks and ascetics from as early as the 3rd century BC. The earliest evidence of human habitation at Sigiriya is the Aligala rock shelter to the east of Sigiriya rock, indicating that the area was occupied nearly five thousand years ago during the Mesolithic Period.

Visiting Dambulla Cave Temple during Dambulla-Sigiriya day tour – Dambulla is sited on a gigantic rock which towers more than 160m above the surrounding land.
2. Translated as ‘Lion Rock’ into English, the name of the monument indicates the way in which visitors used to begin their final ascent to the top – through the open jaws and throat (‘giriya’) of a lion (‘sinha’). Unfortunately, the only remains of this lion figure are the gigantic paws, sculpted into the side of the rock.
While Sigiriya Rock is rich in history and has some pretty dramatic features such as the lion’s paw and the mirror wall, Pidurangala Rock has a much more natural feel, despite also housing a temple.
3. Pidurangala Rock is adjacent to Sigiriya Rock and is the best viewing spot of Sigiriya Rock as it is only slightly lower. Pidurangala is a popular spot for sunrise as you can enjoy 360-degree views of not only the valleys but also Sigiriya Rock.
4. Float over some of Sri Lanka’s dramatic landscapes, the world heritage sites, Lakes and Rivers, Cultural sites, and the breathtaking scenery of this wonder of the world.
5. Hot Air Ballooning is a great way to see Sri Lanka, it provides an unforgettable experience. You will be flying in UK made hot air balloons with well trained pilots. During the flight, an experienced ground crew (following the flight path in a jeep) are in constant communication with the pilot of the balloon, ensuring that everything runs smoothly. So all you need to do is relax, enjoy the peace and quiet and admire the views of Sri Lanka!
6.Habarana is where we met up with H again after seeing him last in Sri Lanka. It is also where we have the fondest memories of our quick trip through Sri Lanka. In Habarana, we witnessed hundreds of elephants migrating through the Minneriya National Park. The island is home to over 7,000 wild Asian elephants.
It was a beautiful and memorable experience (minus the surrounding Jeeps filled with other tourists).
